3 Epic Trips from Reno
1. Black Rock Desert (Rivian R1T or R1S – Off-road)
About 2.5-3 hours from Reno lies the vast expanse of the Black Rock Desert—famous for Burning Man, but just as magical the rest of the year. With its open playa and rugged edges, this is where Rivian’s off-road chops shine. Add a platform and tent, and you’ve got the ultimate basecamp under the stars. Best in spring or fall when temperatures are mild.
We advise to charge the Rivian fully in Fernley, before heading north to Black Rock City. It's important to keep an eye on the battery, especially when you use it for cooking or light.
2. Lassen Volcanic National Park (Rivian R1T or R1S – Off-road with trails)
Roughly 2.5 hours from Reno, Lassen National Park offers steaming vents, alpine lakes, and scenic backroads perfect for an EV overlanding trip. The Rivian makes steep inclines and gravel roads feel easy. With our camping setup, you can wake up next to a mountain lake and brew your coffee in minutes. Summer is ideal, as snow closes some access roads in winter.
As always, keep an eye on the battery, but there are many chargers on the way.
3. Lake Tahoe (Tesla Y – Scenic roads)
Just an hour from Reno, Lake Tahoe is perfect for testing the Tesla Model Y. Cruise around the lake on smooth roads, enjoy tech-driven comfort, and stop at one of the many lakefront campgrounds. If you’re curious about EV life but not into rugged off-roading, this trip is your sweet spot. Anytime spring through fall works, but summer evenings at the lake are unforgettable.
There are some amazing beaches around the lake and great hiking spots in the mountains surrounding the area. Tahoe is also famous for world class skiing, so you might want to use the Tesla or our Rivian trucks for a trip in winter as well.
